Movie N° 195: Breaking the Waves – L. von Trier 1996 DK

When the movie was published I sat in the first row; it was not voluntary, because the cinema was completely filled. This seat is indeed absolute inappropriate to see a 35 mm movie, which was completely shot with a hand-held camera.

If you have a suitable viewing distance, you will see that the cinematographer Robby Müller created an immense visual connection with the intensive staged emotions. Lars von Trier´s drama of relationship, which is on the edge of an abyss, mainly takes place on the coast of Scotland and on a drilling platform.

We choose this movie with its sets because of the visual confrontation with modern insignia (oil industry, health system) and an isolated coastal area.
