Movie N° 194: Kaspar Hauser – W. Herzog 1974 DEU

A historical movie based on an true story: in 1828 a 17-year old man was found in Nuremberg. Complete neglected, without any education and even not able to speak a language. In his depiction Werner Herzog adopts the folk tradition and goes without sober and scientific facts in order to create emotions and dramaturgy.

The story of this movie doubts about the results upbringing can have. Through the social constraints and scholastic standards Herzog´s Kaspar Hauser will rather be narrowed in his personality than supported.

We choose this movie with its sets because of the countryside, rooms and places, which remind us of paintings from Caspar David Friedrich. In the midst of a Central Germany affected by duchies and particularism.
